Do you know how much food you throw away at home? And why exactly? The Aufgabeln! 2026 project can help you answer these questions. With our app, you can easily measure your food waste. What goes to waste? How much, and why? And above all: how much money do you save by throwing away less food?
At the beginning of September, hundreds of people across Switzerland will measure their food waste for three weeks (14 measurement days). Join in, it's worth it for you too! You will be able to register to measure your household food waste on this website from early June. Sign up now for the Aufgabeln newsletter to make sure you don't miss the start date.
This project is being carried out in collaboration with the cantons of Aargau, Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft, the cities of Bern and Zurich, and the Seedling Foundation.

The citizen science project Aufgabeln! Measuring Food Waste Together, was launched in 2023 in collaboration with the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment of the Canton of Aargau, and was carried out again in 2024.
The aim of this year's implementation is to attract more participants and gather meaningful data on the amounts and causes of food waste at household level. Additionally, Aufgabeln! promotes a more mindful approach to food consumption. This is important because around one-third of all edible food is lost or wasted from field to table. A significant proportion of these losses occur in private households.
During the three-week measurement phase, participants use an app to document the amount and reasons for food waste in their household daily for 14 days. This provides valuable insights into food waste in a domestic setting, offering a direct perspective from the participants' daily lives. At the same time, the project encourages reflection on personal behaviours and demonstrates practical solutions.
These insights serve to raise awareness not only among project participants, but also among the general public. Public closing events and discussions, as well as a comprehensive and personalised evaluation of the data, contribute to raising awareness and developing strategies for reducing food waste.
The Aufgabeln! app remains available beyond the measurement phase, establishing Aufgabeln! as a long-term tool promoting transparency, reflection and a more mindful approach to food in everyday life.
